How to get Pet Mutations in Grow a Garden — Complete Guide(2026)

Grow a Garden features not only beautiful crops but also a countless array of adorable pets. Just as crops can undergo mutations through various means, pets are no exception. This article will provide an overview of mutated pets, covering their specific functions and effects, their visual transformations, and the various mutation methods that have been discovered to date.

Overview

Pet Mutation is a core gameplay mechanic introduced to Grow a Garden on July 12, 2025. Simply put, it involves using the in-game Mutation Machine to bestow an additional trait or ability upon your pet—altering its appearance, boosting its attributes, or even granting it entirely new passive skills. Prior to the introduction of the Mutation Machine, the game already featured a Crop Mutation mechanism, through which crops could acquire additional value multipliers via specific weather conditions, in-game events, or pet abilities. The Mutation Machine expands this mutation concept to the Pet category; furthermore, numerous other methods exist for triggering pet mutations, allowing players to apply mutation effects to their pets in ways that best suit their individual strategies for managing and decorating their gardens.

Why Mutate Your Pets?

Granting Passive Abilities

Almost every mutation grants a pet a distinct passive effect. These effects can be broadly categorized into: Pet XP Boosts, Mutation Application, Passive Stat Boosts, Size Modifications, Theft Prevention, Plant Growth Boosts, Ability Duplication, and Cooldown Reduction.

For example: A pet with the Radiant mutation will randomly emit a beam of sunlight toward a nearby crop every 20 to 30 minutes; this directly accelerates the crop's growth rate, effectively advancing its growth progress by 24 hours; A pet with the Ascended mutation, on the other hand, has a 75–90% chance every 5 to 6 hours to apply the Dawnbound mutation to a nearby crop; this specific mutation multiplies the crop's market value by a staggering 150 times, while also doubling the pet's own intrinsic value. Mutations such as Shiny and Inverted can significantly increase the amount of experience points (XP) a pet earns per second, thereby accelerating its growth and leveling speed. Furthermore, mutations like Mega, Tiny, and Jumbo alter a pet's physical size—ranging from colossal sizes that can fill an entire garden to minuscule sizes no larger than the player character's head.

With dozens of unique mutations available in the game—each offering a distinct ability—pets serve as invaluable assistants, helping players efficiently manage and cultivate their gardens.

Visual Transformations

Every mutation brings about a distinct change in a pet's visual appearance. Beyond simple changes in size (enlargement or reduction), mutations offer a dazzling array of aesthetic variations: pets may glow with an inner light, appear encased in ice, crackle with electricity, shimmer with a golden sheen, become encircled by a vibrant rainbow, and much more. Regardless of the specific mutation acquired, the result feels akin to obtaining an entirely new pet—transforming your companion into a unique and eye-catching centerpiece within your garden's landscape.

How to Mutate Pets

1. Mutation Machine

Before using the Mutation Machine, you must meet two strict requirements:

  • The pet must be Level 50. Only pets that have reached Level 50 or higher are eligible to enter the Mutation Machine. You can increase a pet's experience points by letting it roam in the Garden, feeding it, and other similar activities.
  • Have enough Sheckles ready. Each mutation attempt requires a substantial fee. For beginners, this represents a significant sum of money; therefore, the mutation system is geared more towards mid-to-late-game players.

Once these conditions are met, follow this procedure:

  1. Locate the Mutation Machine: The Pet Mutation Machine is situated to the left of the Pet Egg Shop, near Raphael's shop.
  2. Interact with the machine while holding the pet: Equip the pet you wish to mutate into your hands, walk up to the Mutation Machine, and click to interact with it.
  3. Confirm the operation: A confirmation window will pop up, warning you that the pet's level will be reset to Level 1 after mutation. Once you have verified the details, click the green button. You will then pay the required Sheckles to initiate the mutation process.
  4. Wait: The mutation process takes a full 60 minutes to complete. If you do not wish to wait, you can spend 49 Robux to skip the countdown immediately.
  5. Retrieve your mutated pet: Once the mutation is complete, you will immediately see the changes to the pet's appearance. You can place the pet in your Garden to observe the actual effects of its new abilities.
Mutation Name Probability Effect
Shiny 32.15% Increases the experience points the pet gains per second by 15%.
Inverted 16.08% Provides an additional 30% boost to the experience points the pet gains per second.
Windy 9.65% Every 5 to 30 minutes, there is a 20–30% chance to apply the Windstruck mutation to nearby crops.
Frozen 9.65% Every 5 to 30 minutes, there is a 20–30% chance to apply the Frozen mutation to nearby crops.
Golden 6.43% Significantly enhances the pet's passive abilities.
Tiny 6.43% The pet's size becomes extremely small; hunger depletion rate is reduced by 20%, and it gains an additional 5 to 30 experience points per second.
Mega 6.43% The pet's size becomes incredibly massive; hunger depletion rate is increased by 20%, and it gains an additional 10 to 40 experience points per second.
IronSkin 3.22% When other players steal your fruit, there is a 35–45% chance to help recover it.
Radiant 3.22% Every 20 to 30 minutes, emits sunlight toward a random nearby plant, accelerating its growth progress by 24 hours.
Shocked 3.22% During thunderstorms, every 45 to 60 seconds, there is a 25–30% chance to attract lightning and shock nearby crops.
Rainbow 3.22% Greatly enhances the pet's passive abilities.
Tranquil 3.02% Approximately every 24 minutes, applies the Tranquil mutation to nearby crops.
Corrupted 3.02% Approximately every 24 minutes, applies the Corrupted mutation to nearby crops.
Ascended 0.32% Every 5 to 6 hours, there is a 75–90% chance to apply the Dawnbound mutation to nearby crops.

Important Notes

  • Mutation results are completely random: After placing a pet into the Mutation Machine, the system will randomly select one from the currently available mutations and apply it to your pet.
  • Each pet can only possess one mutation: If you level up an already mutated pet back to Level 50 and place it into the Mutation Machine again, its old mutation will be replaced by the new one; they do not stack.
  • You can try again if unsatisfied: If you are not satisfied with the current mutation result, you can level the pet back up to Level 50 and place it into the Mutation Machine once more to roll for a new mutation.

2. Pet Mutation Shards

Aside from the Mutation Machine, certain mutations can only be achieved through the use of Mutation Shards. Once a player obtains a Pet Mutation Shard, they can apply it directly to a pet to instantly trigger the mutation; however, it is important to note that Mutation Shards cannot be stacked for use. Currently, Shards can be acquired through the in-game Shop, Pet Achievements, limited-time events, and specific limited-time NPCs. Consequently, some of these Shards are no longer obtainable through standard means; players wishing to acquire the pets associated with these specific mutations must now do so exclusively through trading.

3. Other Methods

Weather

The Alienated mutation has a small chance of being acquired during Alien Chaos weather. Alien Chaos weather occurs during the Alien Invasion Event—an event that began on February 28, 2026, and concluded on March 7, 2026. During the event, Alien Chaos weather would commence once every hour; pets without an existing mutation had a chance to acquire the Alienated mutation during this time. Additionally, players could submit 10 mutated pets to the event NPC to receive a Pet Mutation Shard UFO.

Crop

Elder Candy Blossom is a crop associated with the Easter Event 2026. When players plant an Elder Candy Blossom in their garden, not only do the surrounding fruits have a chance to acquire the Blossoming mutation, but any pet eggs hatched nearby also have a chance to acquire the Blossoming mutation.

Special Pets

Ice Golem
Ice Golem is a limited-time Prismatic pet obtainable by hatching a Christmas Egg with a 0.5% probability. Its special ability grants a 5–10% chance to transform the mutation of any pet emerging from the Mutation Machine into one of four exclusive mutations: ChristmasRally, JollyDecorator, MerryNursery, or GiantGolem.

Peryton
The Peryton is a limited-edition Prismatic pet associated with the Easter Event 2026. When placed in a player's garden, the Peryton will periodically and randomly bestow a blessing upon one of the pets within the garden, granting that pet a significant amount of experience points. Any pet that receives this blessing also has a small chance of acquiring the Everchanted pet mutation.

Grow a Garden is constantly introducing new mutations; players are encouraged to keep a close watch on every event update, as the official community channels are where relevant update details—including information on new pet mutations—are first announced. If you are looking to acquire rare or now-retired limited edition mutated pets, we invite you to visit the Grow a Garden Shop, where a wide variety of mutated pets are available for you to browse and select to your heart's content.
